This is a little off-topic and not really diabetes related. My older son was recently diagnosed with Atopic Dermatitis. While this is related to the immune system, it is not an auto-immune disease. In his case, this seems to mostly manifest itself as eczema (although it now appears he has some allergies).
Does anyone know if there could be any connection with this and diabetes (or any other immune disease)? We can't really figure out where this came from. As far as we know, no one in either of our families has either dermatitis or eczema. He did have eczema when he was a baby, but it went away after about a year. It suddenly reappeared earlier this year. -------------------- Aaron

I did that and haven't had any problems ever since. I think atopic dermatitis is a pretty general diagnosis for a skin irritation that could have many causes that are not necessarily immune-related. I've always had "sensitive skin" and, in my case, the problem seemed to be a reaction to chemicals in laundry detergent. I suggest your son think about whether there have been any skin-related changes in his routine-new laundry detergent, soap, sun tan lotion, etc., and maybe try an extra rinse cycle. Good luck! Marty Years ago a dermatologist told me never to use dryer sheets, either. I was told instead to use the type of fabric softener that is used in the washing machine like Downy or Snuggle. I forgot to add, the dermatologist did some blood tests. There was one I think called I something (a three letter term). The normal value for that is around 2500. My son's result was 75000. I'm still trying to understand what this test is about, but I think it indicates some immune system involvement (that may be related to allergies).

Is it possible your older son has changed the brand of body wash he uses, or maybe he has changed the laundry detergent being used to wash his clothes? My daughter-in-law told me she has to wash my grandson's clothes with fragrance-free laundry detergent and also she has to use fragrance-free body soap on him. It suddenly reappeared earlier this year. I can't use soaps like Ivory or Joy. I must use detergents like Dove and Tide. Otherwise I develop atopic or contact dermatitis. My skin is really bad at the moment, it hasn't been like this since I was a child. I have moved cities and the water here is chlorinated which dries my skin out so much (where I used to live we were lucky enough to have a pure water supply with no chlorine). I don't use soap as it is very very drying on your skin. I use a body wash and always make sure it is a 'soap free' variety (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
