I had an A1c test done recently, and it was 5.9. I should be tickled to death, but I'm not, because I've had entirely too many lows. That's why the A1c is so low, and I'm just not happy.

I have no idea why this is happening - yesterday before breakfast I was 44. This has been happening way too often for my liking. The really bad news is that I didn't feel that low - at 44!! Dammit.

The good news is that you have the right attitude. You know that a low A1C with a lot of lows (and highs) is not a healthy one.

I hate to ask a long-timer like you, but have you done basal rate testing recently?

I'm having the same problem - I woke up with 52 this AM, and my CGMS showed 71 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)
This has now happened three mornings in a row.
I used my CGMS graph to figure out when the decrease is happening, and have lowered my basals. Hopefully that will fix it.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's update.
BTW, my A1C was only 6.8, but these morning lows have only happened lately. The problem is they happened when I had to correct my post dinner BG. So it's hard to know if the lows are caused by the correction or the basal.
Like Ted said, I probably need to do a basal test with my last bolus around 6 PM.
But maybe this fix based on the CGMS graph will work.

I had to kind of laugh when I read this. I've only had my pump for a couple of years, so I certainly wouldn't characterize myself as a long-timer. Long time with insulin, maybe, but not that long pumping, compared with many here. I never did basal rate testing on MDI.

Anyway, I have been needing to do basal tests ever since I moved 3 months ago. So, thanks for the suggestion. It provided me with the impetus to skip breakfast and test my morning basal. I may have to tweak it a little - not much.

I think tomorrow night I will go ahead and do the dreaded nightly basal test. I've been putting it off way too long, and it is definitely time. I just hate it though. I really don't want to wake up every couple of hours. Oh, well.

I think I'm going to blame it on planetary alignment or something. You've been doing like I do - tweaking things based on CGM data, but sometimes I think you have to do the real thing. So, I'm real glad Ted reminded me. Dern, it's a pain.

I woke this AM with 101. Much better than yesterday. Tweaking my basal based on the CGMS graph seems to have worked.
But this was just one day. I agree - the only real solution is to do a true basal test with BG readings every 2 hours. Maybe I'll do one someday, but if I can get more consistant readings without it I will avoid it as long as possible!
