Do any of you watch "Body of Proof"? If so, I have a question regarding the episode that was on this Tuesday (Feb 26). I'll wait to see if any of you watch the show before I ask my question because I don't know if the question will make any sense without the context of the show.

Now I'm curious. I'm going to watch it. Is it another one of those shows that get diabetes wrong?

Okay. I just watched it. What is your question? I think I know. There were several things wrong, but the part where she looked at the pump and saw the low reservoir alert and said, "She's hyperglycemic" was the one that stood out.

And the actress is really a Type 1 diabetic.

I didn't know that the actress is a type 1 diabetic; that is interesting to know.

You are right - there are several things that seem wrong around that scene. We know that her mother was worried, because that's why she tried to bring the insulin with her. When she looked at the pump, it said "Low Reservoir". This should mean that she is still getting insulin at this point (although her blood sugar could be going up - I know that happens to me sometimes with a low reservoir). I don't think she should have been in any danger (from lack of insulin) at this point. But beyond that, it seems that the symptoms appeared to rapidly for diabetic ketoacidosis (which I think would have been a better term than hyerglycemic). I don't know how you would tell that without checking blood sugar though.

Next (and there may be some confusion on my part here) but the symptoms she was showing seem to be those of low blood sugar rather than high blood sugar.

I also don't see how anything diabetes related would have held her to that spot in the dramatic scene.

These are the ones at least initially that I'm wondering about.

Since I watched it on my computer I was able to pause at the pump scene and indeed it showed Low Reservoir and was blinking. And I wanted to make sure I heard what she said correctly and it was "hyperglycemic." At first I thought she said, "hypo." You're right; how could she know without testing her BG's? That didn't make sense. Having had ketosis and DKA, I know that the first indication is throwing up and extreme thirst; and she would be peeing a lot. She was not eating and she was still getting insulin, most likely her normal basal.

I seem to recall that Megan's first reaction to the news that Lacy was abducted was that her pump would need to be refilled. So that set the scene for the possibility of her running out of insulin. I checked and there is no alert for empty reservoir. But the insulin she had in the package was not familiar at all. And there seemed to be two different kinds, each with a different color top. It might indicate that it was backup (NPH and R) but it was just weird looking. Or maybe they couldn't show a name brand.

It's rare for a show to get it right. I don't know why. I remember an episode of "Chicago Hope" where one of the surgeons who was diabetic had a hypo during surgery. Later she apologized, telling another doctor that she forgot to take her insulin. Someone on another forum mentioned a recent CSI episode where a woman killed her diabetic husband on Valentine's day by substituting real chocolates for sugar-free. When he was running high he took insulin but she had already filled the vial with sugar water. He died instantly. That didn't make sense.

I love this programme, unfortunately we are a season behind as usual. It's not actually screening here at the moment. I always find the diabetes scenes interesting though.

I read that it was among the shows that would not be returning for another season.

That's too bad if it isn't. Its one of the few shows that my son (the older one) will still watch with me. My wife doesn't like this year's format; she said it was turning into more of a police show and prefered it when it was more investigating the death to determine what happend.

I don't watch it that often. I like medical shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and a new show called "Monday Mornings" on TNT (I don't know if you get TNT). Description: "The show follows a group of doctors in their professional and personal lives, centering on their morbidity and mortality conferences that take place every Monday." Alfred Molina leads the post mortem conference and each doctor's performance is scrutinized and criticized. One doctor is fired because of a mistake his scrub nurse has made. I love the show.

I am glad you posted this. I watch Grey's - have not missed a single episode - but I never heard of Monday Mornings. How long as it been on?
I will see if I can get caught up

It's been on since February 4th but you can see the episodes online. It's on Monday nights at 10. They contracted for 10 episodes. It's a David E. Kelley production. It was advertised but I actually heard about it because one of my son's friends is in it (Emily Swallow) and she posted on my FB page. I hope it gets picked up for next season. I watched St. Elsewhere, ER, Chicago Hope and Grey's. I watch legal and medical shows and never reality shows.

Wow that sounds good, will have to wait and see if they bring it here! I also love medical shows, and Grey's Anatomy has long been my favourite however the second season of Revenge is playing here at the moment and I really think I am enjoying it more than Grey's! You would think working in a hospital would be enough but no I have to watch medical shows as well haha (IMG:style_emoticons/default/knocked out.gif)

I didn't think Revenge would last more than one season but it's still going strong. I hope you get Monday Mornings there. It's different from the other medical shows.
