So has anyone gotten a new UltraMini BG Meter? Apparently the lancet device has gone from drab and boring gray to sleek jet black to match the meter.

Could this be a sign that the meter companies are going to make a product that isn't quite so boring? Probably not, but a guy can dream, eh?

I got a freebie UltraMini about a year ago via some promotion Lifescan was running. It has a black lancet device. Maybe they just ran out of gray color.

I never use the Lifescan lancet devices--I think they all suck. I use a Softclix Plus from Accucheck, which is my current favorite lancet device. (I've been using the Ultra Mini for quite a while. simple, small, accurate). and I never use the cases. meter/strips/lancet goes in my pocket.

I just got yet another free UltraMini in the mail two days ago. I honestly can't remember where I signed up for it. I chose blue because I think it's the only color other than black that I don't have. I just opened the box now and sure enough, the lancet device is black. If I have to use a device other than one from Accu-Chek I'll use the Mini device. It's not great but it's better than the ones from Bayer or Freestyle or even the older, longer Lifescan devices. I wish they'd match the lancet device color to the meter.

I just got my first shipment of Contour strips because I love the USB meter. When I first got it I think I had 35 sample strips and all tests done against my Ultra meters were extremely close except one. Now I've done a bunch of side-by-side tests with my new batch of strips and the Bayer is reading lower in many cases. Grrrr! I've got 3 months wrth and still have some Ultra strips so I'll decide whether I want to switch or go back to Lifescan.

Oh, and this newest Mini actually came with 10 sample strips that are not Code 25.

I'm still trying to find one of the Contour USBs for less than the $70 retail price. I just can't justify spending that much when I have four free UltraMinis.

In about 25 years of using meters, I've never paid for one. I have a whole closet full of them. I got my Contour USB because Liz had posted about getting one if you would write a review. I can't really remember how I got all the rest - but I do know I want another Mini (I think). I've given away about 4 of those, and I want one for me.

The Contour is really nice to keep on the bedstand. The light is way cool, and my Bayer meters have almost always exactly matched my Lifescan meters. Sometimes, like Liz stated previously, they read a little lower, but I'd rather have them read low than high like most of the Accuchek meters do.

When I go to have blood drawn, I usually take about 4 meters to test with to compare to lab results.

I gave away my pink Mini which I had never opened and now I wish I had it back even though I have absolutely no need for it other than wanting a complete collection. I still have my original one (silver? gray?) that doesn't have the download port, a green one, purple and now the blue. I'm missing the black one. I recently won an auction on eBay for a lot of 5 or 6 regular Contour meters and one of the A1c meter kits. The price was very reasonable for everything. Now I'm unsure if I even want to continue to use the Contour meters but I have plenty of strips to try now and several months to make my decision. The Contour meters I got from eBay are all different colors. I think I got at least one in every color, two of a couple. I haven't yet done any testing on them to compare to my UltraSmart and the Contour USB. I'll try the A1c test right before I get my next one done at the lab.

I really need to get rid of all my old meters that will never be used.

I think we all have a ton of meters sitting around. I just purged a bunch of them and donated them to a church group that was doing medical work in Peru (I threw in a box of test strips too, otherwise they were fairly worthless to the people down there).

Can you send me the link on how to get the Contour? I was looking over that thread last month and didn't see it. Thanks!

The offer for the Contour USB was a limited time thing being done by a web site. You had to agree to write a review after receiving the meter. They had a limited number to give out. I have not seen any other offers for a free Contour USB yet but you can probably get the regular Contour for free easily.

Yes, the promotion was over a couple of months ago. The lady said they were getting inundated with so many requests, she asked me to remove the link. I did that, and I don't even remember what it was.

I was in the Walgreens yesterday, and they wanted over $70 for one! I'll be shocked if they don't start giving them away again in some fashion. The real money is in the strips, as we all know.

Liz and all,

With my experience in meters ( had the first one in my county years ago), I found that if you're using a brand other than the one you want, just call the company and tell them you want one of their meters for your existing one from their competitor. Usually with some cajoling they'll send you the meter because the profits are made on the strips. I have a support group and that's the way I get the newly diagnosed free meters.

That is true for the most part but some companies just won't give out their latest meter no matter how much you beg. I haven't yet heard of anyone calling Bayer and getting a free Contour USB. Some of us got ours for free by agreeing to write reviews for a web site. Even now it's hard to get Lifescan to give you a free UltraSmart and that meter has been out for something like 6 years. They'll offer an UltraMini or Ultra2.

I can't even get an UltraMini from them because they know I already use their strips. I enrolled in their One Touch Gold program and now I'm sorry I did. Although I probably would never be able to pretend I was using a different meter than I am.

Their rep used to come to our pump club and bring a box full of meters, but someone else is assigned to our geography now and we haven't heard from that person.

I have multiple e-mail addresses (2 Yahoo, one home and one work) and I also use my home & work addresses for shipping. I don't feel guilty because I've been using One Touch meters & strips for years and test a lot. I did have to pay for my original UltraSmart because I could not convince them to send me a freebie. I did get all but $5 back through the rebate.

eBay is a good source for cheap meters. I got 3 Accu-Chek Avivas recently for $20.47 (total cost including shipping) only because I wanted the Multiclix devices. That was the cheapest way to get them. I had gotten 5 Bayer Contour meters plus the Bayer A1c kit for about the same cost but there was added shipping. I wanted the Contours for backups when I thought I was going to switch brands. Now that I can use the UltraLink meters I', staying with One Touch strips. I've given away a couple of the Contour meters already and a friend is coming by today to pick one up for a diabetic cat. I'm waiting to use the home A1c kit until just before I have blood drawn at the lab.

I have ten email addresses including one from the University that I never use and a Yahoo that I never use. I tried another email address once and they still said I didn't qualify. I really have enough Lifescan backups and I mainly use my UltraLinks and one Mini.

Fortunately my "whole family" has diabetes...my daughter's got two Ultra Mini's, my wife now has one. I just ran my black one through the laundry, so it's fried. My dog Stella might get one soon.

I understand the whole deal, and it's probably not morally right to have four meters for free, but then again they've made several thousand dollars off of me over the years, and I do use them (one at work, two at home, one more up at the cabin) and I've sent a few unused ones to charity, so they're definitely getting used.

I managed to get four Ultra Mini's by just sending for them. My pet rock has been asking for one in an exotic color. Now that the Ultra Link works with the CGMS I prefer using them, but the Mini's are so easy to carry.

I got my original UltraMini, the first silver one with no download capability, by calling Minimed and asking for it. I then got a purple one when the colors were introduced. I got a green one the same way, probably by using an alternate e-mail address. I then got a pink one by using the coupon that came with my first UltraLink. Did any other Minimed pumpers get that coupon when the UltraLink was released? It was good for an Ultra meter, even an UltraSmart (but not another UltraLink!). You just had to bring it to the pharmacy and pick out your meter, no prescription, no sending away for it. Just sometime this year I got a blue Mini by signing up for dLife, I think. I was already a member but I used another e-mail to join again. I gave my pink Mini away to a friend for his diabetic cat and now wish I hadn't. I still want another pink one plus the black, to complete my collection.

I keep an UltraLink in my backpack at all times and that's what I use during the day at work. I have my other UltraLink at home, usually on my desk. I keep an UltraSmart by my bed and I have one of the Minis at work. I took the Mini out of my backpack awhile ago for some reason and have to put it back. I've left my main meter at work twice and then got on a bus to visit my sister. I had to buy an Ultra2 the first time that happened. The second time I did that I had the Mini in my bag and that saved me from having to buy another. My sister said I should just leave a meter at her house but I always forget.

I think the current free Mini offer will let you print out a coupon to bring to the pharmacy but you also need a prescription from your doctor to get it.

I vaguely remember a coupon but I never used it at the pharmacy. I got one pink and one silver original (non-downloadable) Ultra Mini's and one pink and one silver dowloadable. I haven't seen the current offer. I didn't know dLife ever offered a meter. I got an A1c test kit when I joined but it was the kind you had to send in. I just threw it away.

I to have a "collection" of one-touch meters. When I want a new meter or a new color I just ask my endo for one. He always seems to have a supply of "Free" meters. May-be that's the best way to fill-out your collection. When I go back in 3 months I'll check to see if he has any pink ultra-minis for the ladys here who are missing this one.
