Friday around noon I started aching, arms ,legs, head, my stomach is wrecked and I have a bone rattling fever. I have not been able
to eat since Friday and have lost about 5-6 pounds in two days. My BG is going up and down like a Yo-Yo between 150 and 300+.

I know I should eat something but really have no idea what to try. If things don't improve soon my wife may have to take me somewhere to
get some IV fluids. I really have no experience with this so if anyone has any suggestions-- "HELP"

Have you tried saltine crackers? Growing up, that's always what I ate when sick. Now that I'm allergic to wheat-gluten, though, whenever I'm really sick I get french fries. Not the healthiest substitute, but they're salty and settle my stomach for a little bit. Peanut butter toast is also my typical fall-back.

Whenever I get a high fever though, I usually can't avoid a trip to the ER for fluids. It's a pain, but I usually feel much better afterward.

Feel better soon!

Do not wait - go to a clinic NOW. Fever in adults is SERIOUS. DO NOT WAIT, PLEASE

You probably have KETONES, which can happen from not eating, not only from high BGs. DKA can be FATAL. GO!

My mother the RNs old standby....saltines and gingerale. Ginger helps with nausea as does the carbonation, and the crackers absorb stomach acid. If you can keep that down, move on to dry toast and maybe some unsweetened applesauce.

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling much better this morning.

I went to see my PCP yesterday and he ran a rapid flu test and it was negative. He was actually disappointed because
now he has no idea whats going on.

Sometimes my doctors make suggestions that are just plain "scary"-- My PCP called my Endo and said I had increased my
TDD buy over 100% and my Endo said his insulin must be bad because there is no way it would not lower his BG.
Then my Endo said "oh" there could be something wrong with his meter or test strips-- I have some great doctors but sometimes
I think they have a few loose screws upstairs.

My doctor sent me home without any Meds they just drew 6 tubes of blood and said they we are afraid to give me anything
until they did some blood work.

When I got home yesterday I took 3--2.5mg Atropine tablets (Overseas survival kit) and started feeling better, my BG slowly
dropped all night and was 91mg/dL at 5:30am-- still spilling some Ketone's but it feels good to see that 91.

Yesterday morning my BG was 495mg/dL and my Ketone's where 120mg/dL. My SG went up to 396 with a Isig: 56.9 ----I believe
this is just about as high as the sensor will read, it never went to 400 and my BG was well over 400 for 4 or 5 hours.

I will not let them put me in the hospital unless they carry me in a ambulance. On October 10th I lost a friend and fellow PWD
he was in Fort Worth, Tx (Harris Methodist Hospital), they where treating him for foot ulcers. His wife was staying in the room with him
but went home for the evening to shower and get cleaned up, when she return hes was in a hypoglycemic coma. They tried for three
days to get some brain activity by lowering and raising his body temperature but where unable to get any kind of response.

On the bright side----I think I'm going to make it ;-)

John,

I am glad you are feeling better.
Your endo's response is more than scary. Insulin requirements always increase when we spill Ketones. I think you better find a new endo.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend - I have never heard of someone dying from hypoglycemia when in a hospital. That's just awful.

I hope they don't find anything. There's no question that the ketones could have been causing all your symptoms, but the question is what caused your BG to rise to begin with . Be sure to let us know when you get the blood test results. This may be useful info to others.

Well I have gotten all my tests back and there normal everything was in range. I have had the worst two weeks, my BG
has been completely out of control. Last week I was sick and could not keep my BG under 200 for more than a few hours
at a time , last weekend I started feeling better but Sunday night my wife went into the hospital and Monday morning
they removed her thyroid. I spent two nights sleeping in a chair in her room and started getting sick again, my
BG has been out of control all week. Thursday was my 3 month check up and my Endo just gave me a verbal hug
saying--your doing great there is nothing I can do to help you hang in there. I have been taking care of my wife all week and
today my BG finely dropped while I was at the grocery store picking up a few things. When I got home it was 40mg/dL and I have
been eating Dex4 trying to offset some of the extra insulin I was pumping in---- Some people would think it was a little
strange to celebrate a Hypo but I thought my BG was never going to come down.

If you knew about your wife's thyroid issue for awhile, that could explain everything. The stress of worrying about someone we love can drive BGs out of control. And of course, whatever you were eating in the hospital (if you were eating) makes it hard, too. I think your endo is right - there is only so much we can do when stress takes hold.

We all understand about celebrating a hypo - I've been there, too!

I hope your wife recovers easily and that they adjust her thyroid medication quickly. Thyroid meds are similar to insulin - it's tricky to find the right dose at first, and there are symptoms associated with too much and too little.
