I am new to the world of insulin pupms. My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 last July. We are now eligible to go the pump route. Looking at the different units, I have a couple of terms I need to try to figue out the meanings before I go to the manufacturers. These terms would be:
Total Basals (example 12/day) Basal Profiles Basal Interval If anyone could give a clearer explaination of what these terms mean, I would be greatly appreciative. |

Total basals 12/day: The pump will deliver 12 different basal settings during a 24 time frame. Example: 12am-3am= .5u...3am-6am= .8u...6am-12pm= .6u...up to 12/day Basal profiles: This would be one profile (12am-3am= .5u...3am-6am= .8u...6am-12pm= .6u.) Basal Interval: is the shortest time frame you can set 1 segment of a basal profile. Example: Medtronic and Animas are both 30 min. You can down load the manuals for both the Medtronic and Animas pumps on their web sights. -------------------- John

The Accu Chek combo if available where you are has 24 basal profiles, a different one for every hour.
As suggested looking at the appropriate websites is a very good starting place for information. -------------------- Type 1 Diabetic, diagnosed at 2 years old on 1st August 1976.

I think you can program up to 5 diffrent profiles on your Accu Chek and each one can have 24 segmnts with different basal settings. They do not sell the combo in the US...for two years we have been waiting...my corporate attorney has the old Accu-Chek Spirit. -------------------- John

A basal profile is your complete list of basal rates over a 24 hour period. Many people who work have a basal profile for workdays and a different profile for weekends. John you are indeed correct, was not sure how to word it without confusing myself and everyone else!!! As it's still not available in the US I guess it does not matter anyway!
