Sorry to cross post - but I am very interested in the CGMS business and seeing active competition.

Is Dex/Abbott suddenly backing out of this space?

Or is this some funky quality issue?

Abbott is the Navigator NOT Dexcom. Dexcom is alive and well. The Navigator is at least temporarily discontinued.

Our pumper's support group is meeting tomorrow, and we have a lot of Navigator users. I'm curious to find out what they know. This is distressing ... like Drew, I think the more options, the better.

I do know that the Nav users truly love their systems. I'll post about their responses tomorrow.

There's been quite a discussion about this on the Yahoo! CGMS mailing-list. People debating if this means that Abbott is abandoning the CGMS.

As for the sensors, they are out there if you're willing to pay enough. My normal source where I buy 6-packs for $390 says they cannot ship until 5/1. However, I just order a pack from Edgepark for immediate shipping, for $580! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/censored.gif) The fact that I can get around 3 months out of a pack takes some of the sting out. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/Shot.gif)

What I'd like to know is what the issues are that have prompted Abbot to suspend production - they are even offering refunds! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/Whaaaaaaa.gif) Must be a pretty big problem if they are looking at a total redesign...except then why haven't we heard about it?? I wonder if it's simply (ha) a production problem...


$97 / sensor ?!?!? Holy...and I thought the MM sensors were expensive!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

This is kinda weird replying to my own post... but, our support group met today, and none of the Nav users seemed to be concerned. Of course, they all have their transmitters/receivers, but none have had a problem getting their sensors.

I wish I had questioned them a little more carefully - we talked about so much stuff, I got distracted and forgot. It seems they are working very hard on some major updates to the Nav, so I think that is the root problem.

These folks have been great - we meet for 2 1/2 hours, and then many of us go to lunch together for another 2-3 hours, so I have 5-6 hours every month I get to spend with fellow pumpers. It is wonderful. I would strongly encourge folks to try to set up their own pumpers support group in their area.

Before I started on the pump in 1993 I joined a pump group that met once a week in ADA headquarters. The group was run by Mario, a MiniMed rep. Later, after I was on the pump for a while I wrote an article about pumping that was published in a now defunct diabetes publication. I interviewed many of the members. Then the ADA moved headquarters and last I heard Mario left MM and I have no idea where all the members went.

We had another group at the Joslin, NJ and when that closed down I transferred to a NY Joslin and we had another group. Then my endo left Joslin and opened his own center and the CDE from Joslin followed him and ran another group. Then Tina, the CDE, left and that was the end of the group. My endo is now with a large medical group and I've asked about a group and he said he would talk to this other CDE. (I met her once). Then two days ago I got a phone call from this CDE. She got my contact information and she was calling me about my new Revel. She wanted to make an appointment to train me. (MM gave her my name because I didn't go through the Pathway; I got an early upgrade through insurance--my 522 warranty is up in July. So I am on a "new pumper" list.) I explained to her that I was using the pump and I loved it. She was appalled that I started it myself. I tried to explain that I've been pumping for 17 years and I had been on the 522 RTS. I said that I didn't need training. She couldn't get it through her head that I neither need nor want training.

At that point I said that while I don't need to be trained I was wondering if anyone is considering starting a pump group like the one we used have when Tina was there. This CDE said, "Oh would you like to meet with me to learn how to insert the sensor?" She was trying my patience. I said, "NO. I am talking about a pump group." Finally she said that the others who ran groups got paid for it. Then it dawned on me that she had my name and the facts meant nothing; all she wanted to do was schedule a training session so MM would pay her. She was upset that she'd lost a potential client. She didn't care that I didn't need training. So I decided that if there is going to be a group I don't want that ditzy woman leading it. She'd probably charge an entrance fee and sell refreshments.

I might post a notice in the doctor's office but I don't want her there.
