On page 122 of this pdf file (document numbering: page A118) is an abstract that appeared in the Diabetes Technology Meeting on October 31, 2013.

From that abstract plus a few other articles (Google is our friend) it appears to me that there is a small start-up company (6 people?) that grew out of research work started in 2007 at the University of Connecticut. They got a significant grant (nearly half-million dollars) in 2012, and they have a prototype sensor, maybe not as small as their final goal, that they have put into one rat for testing. At the time the abstract was written, they intended to run the prototype in the rat for 3 months to see how well it works.

There were a bunch of vaporware articles that came out in 2010 that described the idea as if it were already a working product. Only time will tell if this is real.
