New User-----I have yet to meet with a Medtronic rep, so I am not sure if this is an option......but I have been concerned about it, since the pump is so expensive. Do the Pump rep's (or RN's) have any loss or damage insurance that you can purchase? I am concerned about it I lose or damage my pump through fault of my own.
Thanks
Johnny

I have never heard of insurance that is specifically for a pump.
Homeowners or Renters insurance should cover it if it were lost or stolen. I'm not sure how that could happen since you wear it 24 /7. I have heard stories of pumps stolen from beaches or pools - that is why I have a waterproof case for mine, and I never take it off.
If it breaks for any reason, whether or not it was your fault, they will replace it. (how would they know it was your fault?) You just call and say there is a problem with the pump and they replace it.

I'm not sure of this. I suspect that many insurance policies would require a special rider for medical equipment, especially as it is so expensive. I'd suggest asking your insurance agent.
I haven't done anything about it as I never disconnect except when I'm showering and that would only be in my home or hotel room.

It has always been the same for me except when I had to leave my pump in my hospital room when I was taken down to Imaging for an MRA. When I went in as outpatient I was able to lock my pump in a locker. I would never just leave it on the beach or at a pool.

Next month I am taking a 'loaner' with me on an overseas trip. I called my insurance person and told her that while
I hadn't been worried about insuring something that is attached 24/7, I am concerned about taking a very
expensive 'loaner' to Korea. She looked it up. Such a medical device can be insured through my home owner's
(renters, actually) for $200 a year, and I can cancel it after I get back and return the pump.

That's good to know. I am always concerned about the backup I take with me on trips. I usually put it in the hotel safe. I have always assumed it was covered under my homeowners policy.

I looked into this before too, and was also told by my insurance rep I would need an additional rider, just like I do for other expensive items like artwork and jewelry. Your basic homeowner's insurance will NOT pay replacement value on expensive items in the multi-thousand dollar range.

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your support and insight over the years. I've been a Minimed pump and CGMS user about as long as Arlene. I've lurking here for a long time and finally came across this topic where I might have had an experience worth sharing. My house was robbed a couple of years ago by thieves who dumped my jewelry into my luggage and carried it off with my back-up pump inside. My insurance company reimbursed me completely for the cost of a replacement pump even though my medical insurance bought it for me originally and I had no special insurance rider. It might be that coverage for pump losses varies among policies and I was just lucky, but your coverage might be better than you think.

Just based on items in the multi-thousand dollar range the homeowners insurance should cover it. It will cover personal computers. I know my laptop cost about $3000 five months ago. If something happened to it and homeowners insurance wouldn't cover it, I'd be ticked off. Now it could be possible that insulin pumps would fall under specialized medical equipment, which might not normally be covered. But then again, I'm not an insurance agent either.

Every one reading this thread should be very cautious in making any decisions from info that various users have posted!!! Many of the p0sts have been accurate in parts but there are many unknowns and the only way to make sure about coverage under your homeowner's or renter's policies is to contact their insurance agents. No if, ands or buts about it!!!!
These policies have so many variables in them now days that one policy does not apply to all. The cause of the loss will impact coverage drastically and I will quickly try to use some of the comments here to show examples. The best coverage for your pump is the example from , I believe Susan, about her trip to Korea. Individual riders can cover all sorts of more expensive items such as Fine Art, jewelry, and yes, medical equipment. They are generally individually identified with a value assigned and are GENERALLY COVERED for all risk of loss, in many cases even for breakage caused by dropping them. Even such things as allowing them to fall into a toilet would be covered. Someone mentioned a theft from their home of jewelry. At your described place of residence, you generally have broader coverage than on the road; most policies have some sort of limited coverage for your personal pproperty (contents of your home) away from your premises, either a percentage of defined amount. A fire loss at your home can, and GENERALLY is covered for replacement cost, while a loss away from your home can be for limited coverage only. GENERALLY,there are limits for theft of cash and jewelry but no limit for some of those type items for a loss by fire!
There are so many variable out there in personal homeowners/ rental policies that you must talk to your insurance broker, and hope that you trust what they do for you. Every one wants the cheapest thing they can buy and a not so above board agent can give you the cheapest product so they appear competitive. Beware of what you think is cheap, good coverage. To a degree, insurance is like many other products out there; you get what you pay for. Talk to your agent and get them to interpret what your polciy will provide for you. Point out your specific concerns for special valuable items whether it's jewely or pumps, or anything else.
I can't even begin to try to give a detailed explanation here!!!! Call your agent or broker............

Justin- Call your broker!! How about when you are travelling? Your laptop is probably covered for replacement cost at your home, maybe, but what coverage is on it when you travel?? How about in your car?
